Statistical measures and displays
Use this for the mean of a data set, or how many values there are from the sum and the mean.
Diagram
5 values in order: 4, 5, 7, 9, 10.

Formulas
sum of the 5 values = 35
Add all the values = sum
35 ÷ 5 = 7
Sum ÷ number of values = mean
Assumptions
•
The mean shares the total equally among the values: sum ÷ number of values.
•
It is the balance point of the dot plot.
•
One very large or very small value moves the mean a lot.
•
From 3 to 12 values.
Step-by-step
WE KNOW
Number of values: 5
First value: 4
Second value: 7
Third value: 9
Fourth value: 5
Fifth value: 10
FIND
sum, mean
Step 1 · Find sum
sum of the 5 values = ?
Add all the values = sum
Add all the values.
4 + 7 + 9 + 5 + 10 = 35
Sum = 35
Step 2 · Find mean
35 ÷ 5 = ?
Sum ÷ number of values = mean
Share the sum equally among the values.
Mean = 7
Check
Put the numbers back in. Both sides should match.
4 + 7 + 9 + 5 + 10 = 35 ✓
7 × 5 = 35 ✓
