Formulas
Whole groups of 12 in 41 = 3
Smaller units in all ÷ smaller units in one bigger = bigger units, with some left over
3 × 12 = 36
Bigger units × smaller units in one bigger = from the bigger units
36 + 5 = 41
From the bigger units + extra smaller units = smaller units in all
Assumptions
•
A measurement can mix units: 3 feet 5 inches, or 2 hours 15 minutes.
•
Change the bigger units to smaller ones, then add the extra smaller units.
•
The extra is less than one bigger unit.
•
Going back: divide by the smaller units in one. The remainder is the extra.
Step-by-step
WE KNOW
Smaller units in one bigger: 12
Bigger units: 3
Extra smaller units: 5
FIND
from the bigger units, smaller units in all
Step 1 · Find from the bigger units
3 × 12 = ?
Bigger units × smaller units in one bigger = from the bigger units
Each bigger unit is that many smaller units. Multiply.
3 × 10 = 30 and 3 × 2 = 6
30 + 6 = 36
From the bigger units = 36 (1 foot = 12 inches)
Step 2 · Find smaller units in all
36 + 5 = ?
From the bigger units + extra smaller units = smaller units in all
Add the extra smaller units.
36 + 5 = 41
Smaller units in all = 41
Check
Put the numbers back in. Both sides should match.
41 ÷ 12 = 3 remainder 5 ✓
