Formulas
3 × 8 = 24
Boxes × in each box = in the boxes
30 − 24 = 6
Crayons Ben has − in the boxes = how many more Ben has
Assumptions
•
First multiply to find how many are in the boxes.
•
Then compare: take the number in the boxes away from what Ben has.
Step-by-step
WE KNOW
Boxes: 3
In each box: 8
Crayons Ben has: 30
FIND
in the boxes, how many more Ben has
Step 1 · Find in the boxes
3 × 8 = ?
Boxes × in each box = in the boxes
Multiply the boxes by the number in each box.
Count by 8s, 3 times: 8, 16, 24 → 24
In the boxes = 24
Step 2 · Find how many more Ben has
30 − 24 = ?
Crayons Ben has − in the boxes = how many more Ben has
Take the number in the boxes away from the number Ben has.
30 − 20 = 10
10 − 4 = 6
How many more Ben has = 6
Check
Put the numbers back in. Both sides should match.
3 × 8 = 24 ✓
30 − 24 = 6 ✓
