Number sentences
Faces: 4 + 2 = 6
Vertices: 4 + 4 = 8
Edges: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
Good to know
•
A face is a flat surface. An edge is where two faces meet. A vertex (corner) is where edges meet.
•
A cube has 6 square faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices.
•
A prism has a top and a bottom that match. Flat faces join them.
Step-by-step
WE KNOW
Sides of the top: 4
FIND
faces, vertices, edges
Step 1 · Find faces
Faces: 4 + 2 = ?
Count one face for each side of the top. Add the top and bottom.
4 + 2
Faces: 6
Step 2 · Find vertices
Vertices: 4 + 4 = ?
Count the vertices on top and the vertices on the bottom.
4 + 4
Vertices: 8
Step 3 · Find edges
Edges: 4 + 4 + 4 = ?
Count the edges on the top, on the bottom, and going up.
4 + 4 = 8
8 + 4 = 12
Edges: 12
Check
Put the numbers back in. Both sides should match.
Faces: 4 + 2 = 6 ✓
Vertices: 4 + 4 = 8 ✓
Edges: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 ✓
