Horizontal stretch and flip

Use this for “(4, 2) is on y = √x. Where is it on y = √(2x)? On y = √(−x)?”

Chart

f(x) = √(2x)parent y = √x01234500.511.522.533.544.5xy(2, 2)
f(2) = 2
b = 2: the graph is squeezed toward the y-axis to 1/2 of its width
The parent y = √x is dashed

Assumptions

•
Here f(x) = √x, dashed. A number b inside, f(b(x − h)), acts on x: the graph is squeezed toward x = h by 1/b.
•
A b between −1 and 1 stretches the graph instead, and a negative b also flips it across x = h.
•
The parent’s point (p, √p) lands at (h + p ÷ b, √p): only x changes.

Step-by-step

WE KNOW
b = 2, h = 0, p = 4
FIND
y of the point, √p (Y), x of the moved point (X)
Step 1 · Find y of the point, √p (Y)
Use Y = √p
The
point
on
the
parent
is
(
p
,
√
p
);
a

Step 2 · Find x of the moved point (X)
Use X = h + p ÷ b
The

graph
reads
the
