Lowering the back pressure on a nozzle

Use this for “A nozzle with Aₑ/Aₜ = 1.6875 runs from 1000 kPa. What happens as the back pressure falls to 50 kPa?”

Put in order

Put the flows in order as the back pressure pb falls from p₀.

Assumptions

•
A converging–diverging nozzle fed from a reservoir at a fixed p₀ exhausts into a back pressure pb.
•
Once the throat reaches M = 1 the nozzle is choked: lowering pb further adds no flow.
•
The design point is the shock-free supersonic exit, where pb equals the exit pressure pₑ.
