How strong is the band?

Use this for “Why is [Mn(H₂O)₆]²⁺ so pale while MnO₄⁻ is intensely purple? Which has the larger ε?”

Sort

How strong is the band that colors it?
Tap a card, then tap its group.
Ask which rules the band breaks: spin and Laporte both, Laporte only, Laporte weakly, or neither.

Assumptions

•
ε is the molar absorption coefficient at the band’s peak, in L/(mol·cm); each card names the band that colors the ion.
•
Spin rule: an allowed band keeps the number of unpaired electrons. Laporte’s rule: a d–d band is forbidden when the ion has a center of symmetry.
•
Vibrations and a missing center of symmetry relax the rules; the ranges are typical, not sharp.
