Where respiration and photosynthesis happen

Use this for “Where are NADH and FADH₂ made, and where does O₂ go in respiration?”

lightglucoseO₂CO₂H₂OATP → cell workChloroplastMitochondrioncytoplasmCytoplasm: glucose → 2 pyruvate + 2 ATP
In the cytoplasm, glucose (6C) splits into two pyruvate (3C): 2 ATP spent and 4 made, so 2 ATP and 2 NADH net.
It needs no oxygen.

Assumptions

•
Counted per glucose: textbooks today give 30–32 ATP in all; older ones say 36–38.
•
Each NADH yields about 2.5 ATP at the electron transport chain, and each FADH₂ about 1.5.
•
Photosynthesis runs in the chloroplast and respiration in the cytoplasm and mitochondrion.
